Protest held in Tavoy
Aug 29, 2007 (DVB)—A group of about 50 people staged a protest in Tavoy this afternoon, calling on the military to decrease fuel and commodity prices around Burma. Eyewitnesses said the protest started between 11:30 and midday today, with demonstrators marching through the streets chanting slogans and holding placards. “There was about 50 of them and about 20 of them were on motorbikes. They told everyone they were protesting about the hikes in commodity prices and inflation,” one eyewitness told DVB on condition of anonymity. It is unclear how long the protest lasted with some bystanders saying that the demonstrators were still marching at 12:30. There were no reports of government interference in the protest.
